serve the lord with gladness

A hymn by Fanny Crosby goes like this:

To the work! To the work! We are servants of God,

Let us follow the path that our Master has trod;

With the balm of his counsel our strength to renew,

Let us do with our might what our hands find to do.

The work of a Christian is to share the Word of God and the love of God wherever we go. This Word of God and love of God that we share is a message of reconciliation. In 2 Corinthians 5:19 Paul says, “He (God) has committed to us the message of reconciliation.”  In verse 20 he adds, “We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors…”

An ambassador is one who represents his government in the country of another government.  As ambassadors of Christ we represent the King of Kings and Lord of Lords to the people of this world.  As ambassadors it is our responsibility to deliver Christ’s message of love, forgiveness and salvation to those who have not received Him into their lives.

We deliver the message of Christ in various ways: by the way we live, by the attitudes that we have, by acts of kindness and generosity in meeting the needs of others, by faithful stewardship in giving tithes and offers to enable the gospel to be preached around the world, by consistent discipline in prayer, Bible Study, Worship and service. People who may never read the Bible or enter a church building, watch us every day. They either see Christ in us or they don’t.  They see a genuine faith and love of God in us or they don’t.  A man that I was privileged to lead to the Lord many years ago told me that he wanted the same life and faith that he had seen in his wife.  No greater compliment could be given to another person. Do we live in such a way that others desire the faith in Christ that they see in us?

Being the Christian that Christ calls us to be, doing the work that Christ calls us to do requires submission to Christ and discipline to live the life that He calls us to live.  We are servants of God. Let us follow the path that our Master has trod.

In His Love,

Charles
